Basic Web Site Creation (Grade 7)

In this module, students will use Microsoft Word to create a small, eight page website introducing different characteristics and properties of selected animal phyla and classes.

All necessary files for this module are available online from this page. They can often be found in their original file format as well as in Acrobat format. The free Acrobat Reader is available for download here .

To save documents to your computer's hard drive, right click on document's hyperlink and choose "Save Target As..." Tell your computer where you want to save the file.


Steps                                                  

1) Students need to get a USB drive or a CD-RW with a jewel case to store it in if they don't have one already. This will allow students to back up files and take files home.

Rubrics, Note Sheets and Checklists

2) Students receive rubrics for project. Teachers go over rubrics with students.
Students are responsible for reading rubrics and to know what is expected of them. Students need to self-evaluate the technology rubrics (rate themselves) in pencil before handing in their project portfolio when they have completed the project.

Technology documents: Rubrics , Vocabulary / Concept Notes Sheet (Acrobat File).

Content documents: Rubrics , Page Descriptions , Research Note Sheets, List of Animal Groups

These rubrics and note sheets need to be kept in students' project portfolios (paper folders).


Research

3) The librarian will instruct students on effective research techniques.

4) Students will receive (electronically) a document called Searching on the Web - Citations . They will go over it in the lab with the technology facilitator. This document will include information on using citations. Students are expected to cite their sources using MLA style on their citation page (last page).

5) Students will receive Vocabulary / Concept Notes Sheet (Acrobat File). This sheet needs to be completed by the end of the manual. The technology facilitator will periodically go over terms found on sheet.

6) Graphic Organizers: (Word files) Research Note Sheets.


Web Site Creation

7) Students will receive Startup Sheet to help them set up and start their project.

8) The technology facilitator will demonstrate important steps needed to complete site.


Assessment

9) Students complete Reflection Form.

10) Students must self-assess themselves using the technology rubrics provided to them in the beginning of the module. This will be done in pencil.


Completion

11) Students will hand in their project portfolios which must include:

  1. Technology Rubrics (self-assessed)
  2. Vocabulary / Concept Notes Sheet (completed)
  3. Reflection Form (completed)
