ES News Flash: Join Us for Helping Hands & the ES Musical!

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING HEARTCARE DOMINICANA!

heartcarewalk1heartcareheartcarewalk2

During the week of April 16th through 20th, CMS held its annual Heartcare Dominicana fundraising event.  This organization helps less fortunate children with congenital heart disease.  In addition to monetary donations, the Elementary School hosted several events to help raise awareness for this worthy cause.  Students participated in an all-school walk and attended a Zumbathon during recess time.  The ES Student Council raised RD $12,000 by selling paper hearts that students and teachers could purchase, write a message on them, and have delivered to someone on campus.  The final total raised by the ES was RD $121,807.50 (RD $14,000 more pesos this year than last).  Thank you to all members of our community who helped to support this very important effort!

STUDENT COUNCIL SPONSORED DRESS UP DAY:  WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER?

On Friday, April 27, students were allowed to dress up as their favorite character from a book, from a movie, or as a superhero. We appreciate the effort parents put into making costumes appropriate both in content and age.  Mr. Bahrenburg's costume was a reward from a reading incentive program in which students met their reading goal.  Students were rewarded by voting on his costume; the winning one was Fregley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid (see picture above).  It was a fun day!

HELPING HANDS ART EXHIBIT

Be sure to join the Fine Arts Department for Helping Hands 2012 on Thursday, May 3 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.  This yearly event at CMS is another way that we as a community support local community service organizations by auctioning off students' artwork--elementary, middle, and high school--they have created over the past year.  Fundación Futuro Posible is the benefactor of our efforts this year.  We hope to see you Thursday, May 3 in the Art Center on campus!

"WHEN LIFE HANDS YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE!"--BE SURE TO ATTEND THIS YEAR'S MUSICAL!

You are invited to next week's performance of the ES Musical entitled Lemonade!  Composed of a cast of third, fourth, and fifth graders as well as the ES Choir, this production is about how to take even the very worst days and turn them into joy!  The show for parents will be Friday, May 11 at 12:30 PM in the Gym.  We hope to see you there!

MAP®  TEST REMINDER

Elementary students in grade three, four, and five will be taking year end MAP® (Measures of Academic Progress) tests during the week of May 14-18.  This test is given to students two times during the school year to help us determine their achievement in Math, Reading, and Language.  Here are some tips to help your child prepare for this testing session:

  • Your child should get a full, good night's sleep.
  • Before coming to school, make sure you child eats a healthy breakfast.
  • Your child does NOT need to study.  Talk to him/her about being relaxed (not stressed).  It is better to take the test with a clear positive mind!

For more information, please visit your child’s grade level moodle page through the ES Parent Student Portal at www.cms.edu.do and click on the word MAP®.
