CMS Community Garden Update

Friday, June 8, 2018

It was a busy year in the CMS Community Garden! Working together with Quisqueya Permacultura we have transformed the garden to reflect our diverse community here at CMS in the Dominican Republic.

Stop by and see the many plants that students planted! You can find:

  • Coffee
  • Mint
  • Taro root
  • Lemongrass
  • Roselle
  • Bananas
  • Loofah
  • Sunflowers
  • Pineapple
  • Aloe

Our goal is to improve the garden for CMS students and staff to have a healthy, safe garden where native plants, vegetables, flowers, and trees can be used to teach students about the importance of living sustainably, soil building, working with nature- not against it, food sovereignty, plant reproduction, and about how these aspects are all part of the conservation and regeneration of Dominican culture. Students and teachers can also use the garden to develop social-emotional skills such as having patience and respecting natural processes, developing observation skills, working in cooperation and team-building, conflict resolution, using creativity to design processes for the whole system, etc.

We hope that all CMS students, staff, and families can enjoy the garden in the coming year.

Happy Summer!
