Distinguished Alumni Award

Carol Morgan School honors an alum who has excelled in their leadership roles, contributions to society, and demonstrated character skills reflecting values such as conscientiousness, openness to learning, and honesty. This recognition has been given every year since 2003.

The Distinguished Alumni Award recipient has the privilege of addressing the graduating class during the Senior Alumni Reception. This presents an opportunity to motivate them to serve as leaders in our society, maintain a close relationship with Carol Morgan School, and uphold and live by the values shared by the CMS community. Distinguished Alumni Award recipients join a notable group of alums who have been presented with this recognition in the past.

2023 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient - Sandra Aponte, Class of 1984

Sandra Aponte

Ms. Aponte is a notable businesswoman, president and founder of NTD Ingredientes Foundation, where she advocates for elderly care and nutrition. She was also president of the CMS Alumni Association from 2010 to 2015.

Past Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

  • BS degree in Economics, specializing in Cost Controls and plastic materials processing studies. Mr. Marranzini is an economist and businessman who has served in prominent positions in the private and public sectors, promoting a positive impact on our country through service in non-profit organizations in health, housing, and education. He is President of Multiquímica Dominicana, S.A., Multiquímica Centroamericana, Global Pack, SRL., Doperco, SRL., TMQ Dominicana, S.A., MPB Multivalores Puesto de Bolsa S.A. and other private companies in retail. He also serves as president of the Board of Directors of Asociación Dominicana de Rehabilitación, Hábitat Latinoamérica, and Cámara Domínico-Italiana. He is an active member of the Boards of Directors of Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, Fundación Sur Futuro, Fundación Institucionalidad y Justicia (FINJUS), Asociación Dominicana de Zonas Francas, International Board of Habitat for Humanity and many others.

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Aviation from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. While serving as a Colonel in the Marine Corps, he was the military chief test pilot, responsible for the Production Acceptance and Deliveries of the first Tilt-Rotor aircraft (MV-22) in the world. Dr. Joslin holds FAA ratings and military qualifications in aircraft, ranging from large transports and military/business jets to general aviation airplanes, seaplanes, helicopters, gliders, powered-lift aircraft, and uncrewed aircraft with over 10,000 accident-free flight hours in over 100 aircraft types. He is a graduate and former US Naval Test Pilot School instructor and was a 1994 NASA Astronaut Candidate finalist.

    He was a "Marine One" pilot for the President of the United States under the Bush Sr. administration, entrusted with the safe transportation of the President, Vice President, and Foreign Heads of State, for which he was awarded the Presidential Service Badge.

  • Double major in Mathematics and Philosophy from Wellesley College and a Master’s Degree in International Finance and Economics from Brandeis University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She has over 25 years of experience in finance, investment, private banking, and capital markets. She has held leadership positions in media corporations in the Dominican Republic and Central America. Since 2005, she has been head of Treasury and Capital Markets for Grupo Popular, the country's largest private financial services company. María Angélica is a member of the Organizing Committee of Mujeres por la Igualdad de Derechos (MID) , and also serves on the board directors of Universidad APEC (UNAPEC), El Arca Dominicana – a home for adults with intellectual disabilities, FUNDECITEC – which supports First Lego League and Centro Análisis Políticas Públicas.

  • B.A. degree in Economics from McGill University and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. Miguel, current Managing Director at Raymond James & Associates, holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) designation from the Investment Management Consultant’s Association (IMCA) and the IMCA Investment Strategist Certificate from the University of Pennsylvania The Wharton School. Has worked for over 30 years in the financial services industry, helping families and institutions achieve their investment, financial, and estate planning objectives. Also, serves on the Board of Directors of Children's Home Society of Florida since 2001 and is part of the Executive Committee.

  • BA degree in Communication and Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, and a General Management Program graduate from Barna Business School in the Dominican Republic. Lucile is certified as a Security Professional (Certified Professional Protection) by the American Society for Industrial Safety. Lucile has 25 years of experience in the security sector, specializing in physical and electronic security, and currently serves as president of Dominican Watchman National and A24 Alarma 24, as well as co-manager in La Casa del Conductor. Moreover, Lucile is a Lady of the Order of Malta.

  • BS degree in Business Administration with Magna Cum Laude Honors from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, an MBA from Xavier, and received a full merit scholarship for his academic achievements. Máximo began his career at Citibank Dominican Republic as Management Associate in 1982, and served in different leadership roles in USA and Latin America. Since 2005, he’s served as Citi Country Officer for Citi Dominican Republic. Máximo is a board member of different associations, including the Bank Association of the Dominican Republic, the American Chamber of Commerce, the Association of Foreign Investment Companies, Junior Achievement Dominicana, and the executive committee of the National Council for Private Enterprise. Máximo demonstrates a high degree of commitment and leadership towards social issues and works for a more just society for all.

  • Law degree, cum laude, from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU). Certificate in United States Law & Legal Institutions from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Masters in commercial Law from L'Universite de Droit, d'Economie et de Sciences Sociales de Paris. Member of Dominican Bar Association, IDEMPRESA, FINJUS, EDUCA, CED which led the successful campaign of "4% para la educación". Managing partner at dominican firm, Russin, Vecchi & Heredia Bonetti. Actively involved in various Dominican and international civic organizations with considerable contributions to the fields of public education, institutionality and the rule of law and electoral process.

  • Doctor in Medicine, Master of Science in Public Health. Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease in the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Director of Medical Informatics UAB with research in Biomedical informatics (use of information technologies to improve quality of care) and in HIV outcomes.

  • Business Degree from the University of Miami. Served in the US Coast Guard from 1969 to 1972. In 1980 took over the presidency of Baez & Rannik, where he served for 33 years. In 1986, he and his brother restructured the company and branched out into several commercial fields. Made great contributions to the field of marine operation and the growth of Dominican exports.

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science and M.S. in Computer Science from University of California at Berkeley. B. Eng. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University. Currently a Software Engineer at Google. Previously a Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Labs, a Research Staff Member at IBM Research, and Chief Scientist of Vindigo, a pioneering provider of local search applications for mobile devices. Holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley and is an IEEE Fellow and an ACM Distinguished Scientist. Shares eight granted patents and other nine pending. Has worked to promote the careers of women and underrepresented minorities in computer science.

  • Master's degree in International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management of Arizona, and a degree from Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, Washington, D.C. Is currently Executive Vice President and General Manager of Banco BHD León. Previously Vice President for the Private Sector and Non-Sovereign Guaranteed Operations at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Mr. Puig was responsible for coordinating the IDB Group's private sector and non-sovereign guaranteed operations.

  • Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. Has developed new designs for floating oil and gas production platforms, floating and self-elevating drilling platforms, and wind turbine maintenance vessels, as well as, designed a variety of state-of-the-art tugboats, high-speed crew boats, container carriers, and tankers.

  • MD, Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease Fellow, Surgical Critical Care Fellow, Critical Care Medicine Attending Montefiore Medical Center, Moses Division Cardiothoracic and Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Liver Transplant Team Assistant Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine Bronx, New York (2008-Present). Director of Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Director of Intermediate Care Unit, Co-Director of Infectious Diseases & Microbiology at CEDIMAT, Plaza de la Salud, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2008-Present).

  • Partner and Founder of Headrick Rizik Alvarez & Fernández. Head of the Legal Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce of the Dominican Republic (AMCHAMDR) and the Board of Directors of the Asociación Dominicana de Propiedad Intelectual, Inc. (ADOPI).

  • Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Professor at Stanford University, Ph. D., Recipient of several awards as a researcher.

  • Chairperson and CEO of Grupo SID since January 2015. Former Vice President of Business Development, Kimberly Clark products for Mercasid, S.A. and of the Consejo Nacional de la Empresa Privada. Recipient of several awards as a distinguished female leader in Dominican Republic.

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, and a B.S. in Mathematics/Computer Science from the University of Notre Dame, and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University. Had a major role in the mechanical design of the entire Cobotics product line. Inventor of image guided surgical and interventional systems.

  • Executive President of Grupo Popular and the Administration Council. President of Banco Popular Dominicano.

  • Doctor in Ophthalmology, President of the National Committee for the Prevention of Blindness, Dominican Society of Ophthalmology (1987-1988).

  • Vice President of Institutional Relations and Projects in Grupo Punta Cana. Formerly Chief Development Representative to Central America and the Caribbean for Hilton Worldwide, Executive Vice President for Coral Hotels & Resorts and President of Occidental Dominicana. Served as Executive Vice President for FINADE (Fideicomiso Nacional para el Desarrollo). Is the first alumnus to become Board President of Carol Morgan School.

Requirements

Nominee Must:

  • Have attended CMS for 5 years or more or graduated from the school.

  • Be an individual with demonstrated academic and professional achievements who has obtained distinction in their field of expertise.

  • Demonstrate active participation in community service.

  • Exemplify positive attitudes about life and uphold principles of morality, ethics and other character skills.

  • Demonstrate leadership and reliability in their professional endeavors. 

Notes:

  • Alumni cannot self-nominate. Anyone can nominate more than one alum.

  • Each candidate can only be nominated once, being nominated by more than one person is not a selection criteria.

Nomination:

  • Candidates for this distinction must be nominated by a CMS alum, and the recipient is chosen by the Selection Committee, according to established criteria. The selection criteria includes, among other conditions, leadership, relationship with CMS and community service.

Selection Process:

  • During the selection process, the nominated candidates will be requested to submit their CV’s and any other relevant information.  Submitted materials will be evaluated by the Selection Committee, which is composed of the Executive Alumni Committee as well as former Alumni Chairs. The results are then presented to the CMS Board of Directors for their knowledge and no objection.
